Many imported goods such as bags, shoes and ceramics are sold at a range of prices. Starting from tens of thousands of rupiah up to hundreds of thousands of rupiah.

Still people in Pasar Ular claimed that during the last ten years many merchants have reducing their imported supply due to the monetary crisis. Not only people from Jakarta who shop at this market but also people from out of Jakarta are even interested in hunting for specific items here. Nevertheless shoppers are quite aware of the condition of the market.

School activities in Jakarta that was stopped due to floading are back to normal. However access streets to the schools are still flooded. The heavy rain that has fallen on Jakarta over the last couple of days stopped school activities at several schools in Jakarta.

At present though according to the Jakarta Education Department there are no more shools that are flooded apart from access streets to the schools. In adition school activities at elementary school S-D-N 03/04/12 are back to normal. The headmaster of S-D-N 03 Pademangan Barat Supriyono said that actually the flooding did not stop school activities, but because so many students didn't go to shool. The headmaster decided to close it.

It is hoped the education departement of Jakarta will renovate the flooded schools.

Sakaew province's public health authority has ordered stingent monitoring against avian influenza, dispatching medical teams and volunteers to spread necessary knowledge and warning residents not to physically contact fowls that died of unkonown causes.

Public health authority of Sakaew Dr. Peera Areera revealed that there have yet been any reports of bid flu in the province but noted that the area did experience a minor outbreak in 2004. Dr. Peera also remarked that the province borders Cambodia is a major route for travel beetwen the two nations making it particulary difficult to safeguard and also raising concerns of cross national infection.

The authority assured however that regular rehearsals for responce to outbreak have ben conducted. The authority has instructed all medical personnel in the province to closely watch the situation and has begun cooperation with the livestock authority to follow cases of poultry death.

Joan Roma won the car race on the 13th stage of The Dakar rally on Friday which was shortened due to torrential overnight rain which made parts of the route impassable. The Spaniard won the race in his Mitsubishi by seven minutes 18 seconds from Poland's Krzysztof Holowczyc in Nissan, Guerlain Chicherit of France finished third in his BMW.

PERU AND USA SIGN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT

The united states and Peru finalised a free rade agreement on Friday just days before U.S. President George W. Bush leaves office and despite concerns about labour laws in The Andean Country. President Alan Garcia, at a ceremony in Lima, praised Peru's first trade deal with a major economy, and said it will help ease the impact of the global economic crisis.

The action makes Peru the 17th free trade partner of the United Stated and the 14th country added to that list since Bush took office eight years ago. Two-way trade between The United Stated States and Peru is about 9.4 billion U.S. dollars annually. Peru, one of the world's fastest-growing economies, is also working on trade deals with Canada and China, among others.

The deal locks in and expands Peru's duty-free access to The United States that it has enjoyed since 1991 under a U.S trade preference program for The Andean Region. In return, Peru immediately eliminate duties on 80 percent of U.S. industrial and consumer products, incluiding mining, agricultural and construction equipment. It will also immediately eliminate duties on more than two-third of U.S. farm exports such us wheat, hight quality beef, fruits and vegetables, and other processed foods.

During the rainy season roads in Jakarta are often badly damaged. some of the damaged roads in Pejompongan in central Jakarta and others in East Jakarta have resulted in several accidents. It is believed that the change of office hours in both private companies and government offices will help ease the heavy traffic in Jakarta. Based on a survey the peak traffic jams in Jakarta are at nine the morning. To reduce the traffic jams a regulation has been issued regarding the start of office hours. The regulation is currently being made public areas in central and North Jakarta will start their working hours at seven thirty in the morning.

Areas in Easth and West Jakarta at eight in the morning while areas in South Jakarta will start at nine in the morning. Some of the civil servants in The Gajah Mada central Jakarta area have agreed to the change of the office hours from eight to seven thirty a.m. Meanwhile some of the civil servants in the state court trade and human rights office said that they are dealing with trials that does not recognize time.

These governments are tackling serious security infringements, in particular Mexico. Meanwhile in France two aid workers told journalists of their ordeal after spending over three months as hostages in Somalia. A Japanese woman and a Dutch man were taken hostage on September 22 in Ethiopia and detained in Somalia. They were released on January 7 and told media they were relieved. UNIQUELY CARVED PENS FROM SUBANG WEST JAVA

In Subang-West Java a local resident makes use of unused bamboo stalks to create uniquely carved pens. Atam Hermawan is a middle-aged resident of Kampung Cilimus of The Cisaat village in Ciater-Subang who is found of traditional handicrafts. Finding unused bamboo stalks he transformed the waste into artistic pens.

Assisted by his wife Atam collects the waste bamboo stalks and cut them into shorter pieces before having them soaked in a whitening chemical substance. The bamboo pens are later carved with a type of soldering iron. Atam noted he can produce up to one hundred (100) pens per day. The pen is sold at six hundred (600) to one thousand (1.000) rupiah per piece. The products have been marketed to places outside The Java Island as well as to foreign countries such as Malaysia and Australia.

BRUCELOSSIS A COW OF AUSTRALIAN ORIGIN

The class-1 quarantine house of Bandar Lampung recently exterminated a cow of Australian origin which had been positively diagnosed with Brucelossis disease. The extermination was conducted to avoid the spread of the disease to other animals and to avoid any negative effect on humans.

The cow- Abrahman Cross species was imported by PT Santosa Agrindo it was diagnosed with the animal's immune system. The disease is also known to cause miscarriage in pregnant women consuming products of the affected animal. The affected cow which weighed five hundred and eighty (580) kilogram was slain and burnt at the Metro Lampung cattle slaughter house.

Head of the quarantine house Hermansyah noted that the extermination was conducted following the results of laboratory examinations. The Brucelossis disease is known to be contagious and primarily affects goats, cows, horses and pigs. So far there is no effective medical treatment known for the disease.

In a statement on it's website, The U.S Based group said its ship, the Steve Irwin, had forced The Japanese Whaling fleet into waters off the ross dependency, which is a New Zealand possession. Australia has declared an economic exclusion zone, known by the letters "EEZ", in waters off the coast ot its Antartic territories, and an Australian court order bans whaling there.

However, Japan does not recognise the zone and says its whaling fleet is in international waters. Japan's institute of cetacean research has accused sea shepherd of "eco-terrorism" and of ramming its vessel the Kaiko Maru during a protest action last Friday. Sea shepherd has blamed The Japanese for the collision.

In a video of the incident released on its website, the organisation showed the crew of The Japanese ship warning sea shepherd in English that its protesters would be treated as "illegal intruders under Japanese law" if they tried to board. Prices of daily necessities remain stable during the last few days before the new year's eve while stocks are confirmed to be sufficient for the first few weeks of the year 2009. Until this year-end the decrease in fuel prices has not lead to significant decreases in the prices of daily necessities.

In central Jakarta's Bendungan Hilir traditional market chicken eggs are priced at thirteen thousand and five hundred (13,500) rupiah per kilogram. A one thousand (1,000) rupiah increase from the price in the past few weeks. Price of duck eggs shows a slight increase of one hundred (100)rupiah per kilogram. The 1-R-1 and 1-R-2 types of rice are currently sold at six thousand (6,000)rupiah and five thousand five hundred (5,500) rupiah per kilogram respectively.

Vendors noted that the increase in the prices of rice are mainly caused by the lack of supply due to low harvest yields. In spite of this the stock of rice and other daily necessities are deemed sufficient to meet demands for the first few weeks of the year 2009.

At the end of this year the Government has established a car free day once again in Sudirman and Thamrin street to reduce the air polution. This year the Jakarta administration has held 21 car free days in various in various areas in the capital city. The result is the increase of the life expectancy for people, animals and plants up to one hundred and twenty five days which was an increase from only seventy three days last year.

Besides that car free days also reduced carbon emission up to sixty percent dust pollution up to eighty percent and nitrogenmonoxide up to fifty percent.The government promised to continue this progam next year. The car free day focuses on areas like round abouts. The activities are conducted by displaying a giant banner distributing plants and entertainment stage.

The government urged the state-run-oil company Pertamina to continue and complete the kerosene-to-liquid-gas conversion program by the year 2009. Pertamina has also been urged to provide additional funding for the conversion progam if required. The Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro stressed that the goverment's desicion to continue and complete the conversion progam is meant to lower subsidies for oil fuel during the year 2008.

The conversation program has led to goverment's saving in oil fuel subsidy amounting to nine trillion rupiah. This was made possible by the reduced consumption of kerosene by two point zero five (2.05) million kiloliters. Some four million kiloliters of reduced kerosene consumption have been targeted for the year 2009.

Pertamina estimated the required funds for the conversion progam next year will be arround four point thirty five (4.35) trillion rupiah. The funds will be used to provide gas stoves.Gas cylinders and the first fill and the distribution costs. The conversion program was first launched in 2007 at first the program was targeted to be completed by the year 2011. And now news abroad.

Decorating trees for Christmas does not actually need a high budget. Placing ornaments made out of use items could actually make the Christmas celebration more festive than ever.

A team of medics and staff of P-G-I Cikini Hospital in Jakarta have been busy making beautiful Christmas decorations out of used goods Christmas trees complete with their decorations and placed in every room are the works of art of the hospital staff. Their ideas are unique and creative as I-V bottles mineral water bottles, egg shells sytrofoam and hospital brochures are made into Christmas decorations. It takes work to change these used items into tree ornaments.

With the decorations aside from entertaining patients at the hospital who can not celebrate Christmas with their loved ones at home. A competition is also being held to encourage the creativity of hospital staff and also make people more aware of the need to maintain a clean environment.

And now the bad news come from Bandar Lampung. After the flooding in Bandar Lampung citizens have begun to clear the mud and save their remaining belongings. Nevertheless since the flood has subsided the ten centimeter thick layer of mud in their houses has made it difficult for them to return to their homes.

Friday morning started with members of victims families cleaning up the mud and taking away their remaining belongings. Their electronic equipment has been badly damaged and they can only submit to their fate. The thickness of the mud has caused residents a delay in coming back to their homes.

The citizens state that the Thursday afternoon flood was the worst in seventeen years.There was also a flood back in 1991 but the water level reached no deeper than a metre.

Syamsul Bahri said that the K-P-U has been informed of the change in electing legislative candidates so the comission just needs to fix a number of regulations and at the same the support the constitutional court desicion.

And now limited stock of L-P-G over these past few month caused by damage at the Balongan gas refueling unit has also affected stocks in Bogor west Java. a number of L-P-G agents are starting to run out of gas cylinders causing L-P-G to become scarcer.

L-P-G vendors have been having difficulties in meeting the rising demand for gas from consumers in the area. Stocks of gas at suppliers througout Bogor have been running out the 3.5 and 50 kilograms gas cylinders are running out quickly at suppliers in Bogor causing vendors to suffer large losses.

Rising prices for cylinders of gas is not offsetting their losses. Food vendors at the Tman Topi parkm in Bogor have had to close down their businesses due to the scarcity of L-P-G.

That's a pity, the day before Christmas prices of several staple commodities such as chicken and meat have increased. The increases in price have been taking place for a couple af days in markets throughtout the country in Mayestik in south Jakarta. The demand for chicken has risen but anout one hundred percent.

The price of fresh fish has increased about five thousand rupiah per kilo. Vendors who normally sell 50 chickens are nearing Christmas selling 100. A group of some 50 demonstrators protested outside a court in Athens as four demonstrators from Greece's anti-goverment protests testified inside the building. Court sources said the four protesters testified at a hearing against chargers of violence against police, possession of explosive devices and disturbing the peace.

A decision was expected later in the day on the chargers. More than 400 protesters have been detained during the unrest, but most of them have subsequently been released without charge. A relative of one of the accused said witnesses present were not allowed to give their testimony properly.

It was the second week of anti government demonstrations, unleashed when a policement shot dead 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos. The disturbances have fed on anger over political scandals, high youth unemployment and low wages, and the impact of global recession on Greece.

The vice president Jusuf Kalla is pleased with the implementation of the poor family health services in giving health assurance at the Ciptomangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta.
